Workshops will be held on the last week of every other month to educate foreign entrepreneurs, international students, and J-1 trainees/VIEs (Volunteers for International Experience) about best business practices within the scope of services provided by the Global Access Soft Landing program, launched in January 2014.

The discussion will be led by Miranda Berger, Employment Specialist at The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, and Elizabeth Zimmer, Community Outreach and Resource Planning Specialist at the United States Department of Labor, Wage & Hour Division.

Miranda will provide soft skills training by giving “survival techniques” to foreign students, young professionals, and American employees. She will address the significant differences between U.S. interviews and foreign employee screenings. Written, verbal, and non-verbal communication methods and expectations vary greatly. Foreign-born job applicants have to learn to navigate intercultural differences.

Elizabeth will share her expertise in employment law to highlight guidelines and enforcement of the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor. Foreign and U.S. employers should also feel comfortable joining the workshop since many essential topics will be addressed, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (minimum wage, overtime, hours worked issues, etc.), the Family Medical Leave Act, and certain immigration labor topics.

Location: The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, 1617 JFK Blvd, Suite 555, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Seating is limited so please register by emailing globalaccess@welcomingcenter.org with “workshop” in the subject of the email.
