From the Paris Agreement to a Green Recovery
What Role for Financial Institutions?

To mark the 5th anniversary of the ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the Consulate General of France hosted a one-hour virtual conference. One of the three-long term objectives of the Paris Accord is “making finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse emissions and climate resilient development”. Achieving the Paris target of keeping global warming to 1.5°C will require signatories to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions within 25 years. Financial sector institutions have become increasingly aware of the critical part they have to play for the world to reach this objective.

As the United States prepares to rejoin the Paris Agreement and, along with many countries impacted by the pandemic, to invest in a just and green recovery, 2021 presents us with a critical window of opportunity for climate. How can/should the financial sector step up to the challenge?
